UCP to cover 0.2% of funding costs for 4 new infrastructure projects

Last week, the federal government announced nearly $22 million in capital funding for 3 postsecondary institutions in Southern Alberta.

The bulk of the $21.7 million will go towards the rebuilding of Red Crow College’s main campus in Standoff. The previous campus building (the former St Mary’s Residential School) burned down in 2015.

Of the remaining $1.7 million, nearly $1.6 million has been allocated to the Medicine Hat College Accessibility and Inclusion Project. This project will see the creation of an extension to the college, as well as the renovation of existing space.

Once finished the AIP will result in an Indigenous gathering place for teaching and sharing; expanded lab and classroom space for simulations and teaching; a safe and reliable lift to access the lower level of the building; and the structure for a future solar array on the roof.

The University of Lethbridge will receive the final $184,000 to renovate existing space to become an Indigenous gathering space.

The 3 postsecondary institutions will be contributing a combined $30.6 million in additional funding, which they’ve garnered through municipal and other funding.

The Alberta government will not be funding any of these projects. However, they did allocate $125,000 to aid in renovations for the French Community of Calgary. The FCC will receive $165,000 from the federal government and nearly $140,000 from other sources.
